Rules to Follow and Be Blessed!

I think I am beginning to get it.  I think I am beginning to appreciate what happened on the cross through a different set of eyes.  I've been wondering about what rules I should follow from the old testament and what rules I should follow from the new testament.  This is really a big deal to reconcile, because if you are wrong...

Think about the God of old testament.  It was not unusual for Him to show up and be hacked off at what His people were doing.  He would torch them, bite 'em with snakes, send all kinds of plagues, give 'em food poisoning and God only knows what else.  He did it because His people sinned by their lack of obedience.

Since God gets hacked at us for breaking the rules and He has demonstrated His willingness to kill because of it, one should know the rules of the His game. You might live longer.  But then, God came up with a better plan and the rules changed.  Keep in mind the demonstrative judgemental God of the old testament...

Now consider the God of the new testament that allowed His Son to die on the cross and take all mankind's sin from the past, present and future.  That God is a God of incredible, indescribable love that can't be qualified or quantified.  The love is too big for us as humans to fully appreciate or comprehend.  But when, God allowed the sacrifice of His Son and Jesus chose to let it happen, the impact on the human race was phenomenal!

Today, we have but one most important rule.  That rule covers all rules (past, present and future).  That rule is to LOVE.  How absolutely incredible.  You take the God of the old testament who was ready, willing, able and did wipe entire nations of disobedient men, women and children.  Then, allowed Himself to die on the cross accepting all sin such that our full and complete responsibility is to love.

I wish there were a way to better communicate the awe I feel in the transformation of life, God created in this new birth.  Truly, you must be born again! Then, out of obedience you must love.

In conclusion: As for the rules, you do whatever you do out of obedience to the commandment of love. It's not so much what you do, but whether you do it out of love.
