As the story goes, four allied kings with their men lined up against 5 allied kings and their men. The battle is fought and Abram's nephew Lot is captured and all his possessions. Abram is torqued and rallies his family and goes after the kings. In God's humor, a family of fighters take on allied kingdoms and kick their butt. Lot and family is saved and Abram takes none of his plunder. He only wants his rewards to come from God! This is a sign of faith. Set aside what is tangible and wait on God for His blessings.
Then the Word says, "As the sun went down a deep sleep overcame Abram and then a sense of dread, dark and heavy." It seems the evil one is at work on Abram. Many times I've felt "a sense of dread, dark and heavy" before God shows up with His Holy presence. So when the darkness comes, be ready for the light! Prepare a Holy place for God to reside with prayer, worship and consumption of His Word.
And the Word goes on to say, "When the sun was down and it was dark, a smoking firepot and a flaming torch moved between the split carcasses. That's when God made a covenant with Abram: "I'm giving this land to your children..". As is typical of God, He chooses the seemingly impossible route and provides one the opportunity to believe by faith that God's way is one of truth. Abram is an old man with no kids! But Abram believes...
If you are in the dread, dark and heavy place, prepare the way for God. Then by faith, wait for His presence. He will come.
